Introduction

See if they wet their pants

The words Guru, Swami, Master, Teacher, Mushid, Yogi, Priest,
most of those sporting such a title
are just peacocks.

The litmus test is:
hold them upside down over a cliff for a few hours.
if they don't wet their pants
maybe
you found a real one

My thoughts after “Undercover Nederland on Miracle of Love”

It has been 7 years since I left "Miracle of Love". Yesterday the television program Undercover in Nederland, from journalist Alberto Stegeman, brought home to me once again the joy of not being involved any longer with them, and the joy of being free from triggers.

Website for the program - watch the episode online.

Now, for the first time in the history of Mol, a journalist dared to do what they were most afraid of. Recording the inside activities, exposing (some of) their games, disclosing (some of) their secrets.
And I tell you, the camera didn’t do the real story justice. I have seen much worse then what was shown. For the general public however, what they did show was enough to give a shocking glimpse of what goes on during a seminar, and to be warned about the danger of such spiritual group.
“Miracle of love”, Kalindi spoke, “will be known for the love and care we give to the world. It is truly a mission of givers”. Well, finally the game is up and the sweet seducing love bombing one feels at the beginning of their involvement, like what “Charlotte” the undercover journalist experienced, is unmasked for what truly is: a marzipan coat hiding the most vicious and revolting manipulative power.

It is important not to forget that everyone in a cult is a victim.
A person can be attracted to a group like this for many different reasons. Both the people that are attracted, and the people already inside, tend to be very sensitive, open, intelligent human beings, honestly searching for more in life. It is that true desire and sincere will to help others that is manipulated in a group like Miracle of love. For that, there is no forgiveness possible.
Eventually some of them stayed and accepted the belief system, and -even worse- internalized it. Kalindi needed leaders to spread her kingdom so some of the first disciples that didn’t defect soon stepped up to a higher ladder in the authoritarian organization and from being a victim they became  perpetrator. In other words you start inflicting others the vicious behavior of coercive persuasion, thought reform and brainwashing. You can read more how these techniques apply in MoL organization in this post.

I sincerely hope that Stegemans program shakes up the public opinion, and that some of the members will feel more courageous now to contact an expert exit counselor like Sjoukje Drenth Bruijntjes, to weed out the false identities from their true one. Mol doesn’t teach you to find “your true self” - on the contrary, they teach you to give up your whole identity. And that is a sacrilege against the very soul of people.

It is possible to untangle yourself from MoL’s conditioning. It is hard work, you have to undo all the coercive persuasion applied to you in days, weeks, months and years by your involvement. You can eventually eradicate the cancer that took place just under you skin. And the reward you’ll find is beyond words. The price you pay in opening your eyes with that terrible pain that comes with it, is nothing compare to reconnecting again with that lost true part, the true identity.

As I wrote in the story of my life with miracle of love, I was kicked out after yet another meeting with Scotti, one of the most abusive leaders in Miracle of love. Meeting is not a correct word as I was not allowed to say anything and he just dumped his criticism on me. Abruptly he sent me out of the meditation room. I was punished for speaking up.  Few days later I was called in and told to leave the MoL organization.
Being kicked out was the best thing that happened to me in MoL!
In a very roundabout and slimy way I was told not to participate to any Miracle of love activities for one year, not to visit any Mol center. By then, I was already an outcast, living alone, having had to leave the community house I was living in before and move into a small apartment I quickly had to find for myself.

Already for a while I was not happy in Mol, if I ever was truly, and my unceasing questioning became very annoying for the leader. Somehow I was in a constant fight and rebelling against any rules and manipulation I was experiencing. I was up to my own revolution, which - in there  - could not be tolerated any longer. So after trying to mold me and bend me, to break me and force me to comply the rules and dictatorship of MOL, I was dismissed, peremptorily.

They didn’t tell me not to connect to any MOL members, who had been my friends for 8 years. But as it worked out, that was in fact a very heartbreaking painful experience. No one showed up and asked me why I am not around. It hasn’t been spoken overtly in the meditation meeting, or as far as I know in any other public MOL events. I’ve simply disappeared from one day to the next, as if I never existed before.

I had moved to Munich, and lived with these people for seven years, after one year of preparation and deep thinking between Milano and San Diego.
Needless to say, when the year was over, nobody asked me anything and by then I worked through the most insidious part of exiting myself from what I then realized was a cult.

I obviously never went back!

Glory be to freedom!
And the healthy use of a critical mind
that can freely express itself
without any screening or fear for retaliation,
punishment and more sophisticated abuse.

A very thoroughly essay from Driek about yesterday program.
I felt in much the same way about the "poor" people still after years trapped in the MOL organization.

For those who cannot believe how "normal" people can turn into a totalitarian person I sincerely suggest to watch a very well done German movie: Das Experiment.

My thoughts on the book 'Mother of God', by Luna Tarlo

Since a while my reading has been very selective. I don’t particularly follow the latest trend in writing. I have my own line of books I want to read and study. So I find myself alternately reading the lives of Saints and Mystics of the Catholic and Sufi tradition and biography of people involved in  destructive cults in the current time. And books that helps people recovering from such groups.
So after spending quite some time meditating and reflecting on the autobiographies and works of Teresa of Avila and St John of the Cross, masterpieces of western Mysticism, I took Luna Tarlo's “Mother of God” from the shelf. I knew it was an autobiographic account of her life as a disciple of her own son. I was eager to read her experience.

Luna Tarlo's story has been taking me back into a life of unpredictable events, massive manipulation, subtle and overt psychological abuse and game of power. The book speaks of her experience as the mother of Andrew Cohen, a rather well-known guru, at least in the US. I was fascinated about the narration at the beginning of the book of her life in India when her son "became" enlightened and started to gather followers and close disciples.  It reminded me of some aspect of my past in the same time in Poona with Osho. At that point Andrew actually invited his mother Luna to meet him in India and to become his disciple. Andrew Cohen became enlightened at the feet of Poonjaji, a guru from Lucknow. Many of my fellow sannaysin friends found in him a replacement of Osho, just because he proclaimed others enlightened around the clock. A spiritual game that Andrew had enjoyed perpetuate with his own devotees. But not his mother. On the contrary she got the rough part of the stick.

Throughout the book, again and again I shook my head in disbelief why she would compromise so much of her life and gave up most of her identity to follow her own son in a rollercoaster of situations that didn't make much sense, were rather abusive not to say awful and ominous in pursuit of enlightenment.
Nevertheless, I could relate totally to all of them. I have been through the same and worse. With one difference: the guru was not my son neither my mother,  he was just a guru.  Or should I say gurus: Osho and Kalindi.

Luna had a very insidious battle going on in her soul and mind. It was so deeply intricate to separate her previous natural relationship of mother and son, from what Andrew was requesting of her. The total surrender to him as her spiritual teacher.
It is disconcerting how much we are able to compromise in the name of enlightenment when we are not deeply centered in our self.

People join a group and tend to stay in it because they honestly think they can find what they are looking for with that particular master or guru. You stay in a group because the group bond and initial love bombing are assuring you that you are being loved and accepted. You stay in a group even when you actually don’t receive appreciation any more, but you are challenged and criticized all the time. You stay especially at that moment because you are told that this is the guarantee that God is working with you and that things are moving for you. Enlightenment, or what other gurus call “Freedom”, is just around the corner for you. And so you keep up hope, and you stay.
You stay, even when you feel always the same, and you have become used to this emotional blackmail, trying to reach the carrot that it’s always in front of you but never in your mouth. It doesn’t matter how much you have to give up of your identity, of your life, of your  money and your attachments. You try to do it all because you believe it will bring you to the altered state of a perfect enlightenment, or total freedom. And there will be no more pain and suffering. That is what the guru is preaching from his white high pedestal. Osho did it, and Kalindi did it as well. These are my two experiences with a master.

Eventually when you get really tired, when you are totally disillusioned, when you witness total madness and you are the aim of everybody’s anger and frustration, when you critical thinking is rebelling against the sheep conditioned mind, and when you feel you have got your own life to live you may be able to step out.  Or you are cast out because you don’t fit anymore, you don’t fulfill the high group demand and expectation. And that was my experience. I started to feel a taste of sanity once I was kicked out.

It takes time, strength, immense strength of character and a lot of work in finding again your roots, your true identity. But it is more then possible.
Luna Tarlo met U.G. Krishnamurti, who uncovered the veil over her eyes. She was lucky.
U.G. Krishnamurti (1918-2007) was a Indian thinker who claimed there is no Enlightement.

It made me cringe more then once the ego assaults that Andrew applied on his mother and other fellow disciples. In the name of wanting his mother to surrender totally,  he forced on her massive humiliation, first in front of few devotees, then in front of  the all “sangha” with hundreds of people. He sent her to live in a different house away from him,  punishing Luna for not improving spiritually as he demanded. Living with him and generally speaking living in the same house as your master is the highest goal and a sure sign that you are either already enlightened, or close to it. Having the luxury to share the same roof as your unquestionable leader it is seen as spiritual advancement and success. Andrew also took away from her any possibility to retreat in the safe cocoon of a room on her own, instead she had to share her space with someone else, in order to be under his grasp and scrutinized all time. Needless to say that in such authoritarian group settings, spies are checking on you around the clock becoming therefore the extended eyes of the god/guru himself. In another attempt to break his mother separate life, he ordered to toss all her life’s writing works and to get rid of her house in New York so that she could cut ties with the old self.

It reminded me how often in Munich during my association with the Miracle of love group I had to change houses, sharing rooms with others in order to let go of any preferences, attachments and my own separate ways and self. I used to throw fits of anger which were heavily punished. I had to let go of my clothes, jewelry, my way of doing things in order to follow the very strict disciplined lifestyle that was required from a Miracle of love member.

I was looking forward to the part when Luna would finally have a "click", change of awareness, when she would open her eyes and see that she didn't want to be controlled and manipulated anymore.
How long can it take for a person lost in a spiritual group, following a self declared master  to decide to leave and be free from the lifestyle and especially from the belief system around the leader? In the case of Luna it was even more difficult. She had to deal with her son as guru, not just a leader but her own flesh. It is unnatural to reverse the order of mother/father and child. While it is possible to suggest and even teach few things to your parents it is deadly to assume a position of leadership and command on them. Unless they are sick and depend on you, it is bound to end badly and bitterly.

Finally, Luna was able to cut the ties with Andrew, but it did not happen overnight. It took her a lot of struggle to find her own identity and be free from her despotic son and move away from the power mechanisms and control he had over her. The meeting with U.G. Krishnamurti, accidental as it was, was the catalyst to able her to untangle herself from her son.

A key sentence that U.G. Krishnamurti told her and the other disciples of Andrew that were present at the informal meeting, in response to the question if it was necessary to surrender to a guru, was a turning point. U.G. said: “What can a guru give you? When you surrender to a guru, all that happens is that you give up your self-reliance.” Luna was already accustomed to the unorthodox ways of U.G., having read his book “Mystique of Enlightenment”. And something penetrated through the thick fog and lift it.

The book is not only exploring from an intimate perspective the abuse of power, the incessant fear, and the psychology of obsession, but it describes also a personal way out from the destructiveness of such a group.
Also, to me this book is another testimonial of the triumph of a soul, a hymn to freedom and the willingness to share her experience so that others may be helped.

It is quite a ride to trust your own spiritual nature, intimate experiences and dialogue with God, but it is possible to have the awareness both of the trickster, con artist, self proclaimed guru, spiritual teacher and the honest spiritual guide. It is possible to be able to discern, therefore to choose.

The best I can do right now after my life's adventure in the spiritual search for answer is not to follow anyone and be truly myself. I suspect I had to go through major disappointment and frustration to be able to stand now in absolute trust with myself and  rejoice in my own special, unique and personal soul connection with God.

Dutch television exposes Miracle of Love

Big news in The Netherlands regarding destructive groups, cults, or in Dutch "sekte".

It has been five years since I first spoke in public about Miracle of Love, in a conference in Groningen organized by the counselor Sjoukje Drenth Bruintjes. I hesitated at first to speak in front of a large audience, but then I decided it was part of my own recovery to expose the games of Miracle of love group.
After that I was asked to present on the Miracle of love organization at the annual International Cultic Studies Association (ICSA) conference in Bruxelles in June 2007 (see the full story of my talk here).

Through the writing in my blog I have also been able to help people who were thinking about leaving MOL, and family members who had loved ones lost inside MOL, who didn't know how to relate to them anymore.

Though Miracle of love has been exposed by journalists over the years across Europe and USA, and ex-members like me have spoken openly about our personal experience with MOL, the group didn't cease to exist. It is difficult to understand or believe a story like mine if you have no experience. People need to be educated of the damage groups like these are inflicting on its members.

But... this Sunday, on February 27th, the Dutch investigative journalist Alberto Stegeman will reveal in his tv program 'Undercover in Nederland' some intense and never seen before images of what really goes on behind the closed and guarded doors of Miracle of love.

For a year, Alberto Stegeman and his team secretly infiltrated the Miracle of Love cult. The television program will show the outcome of this outstanding undercover action for everybody to see and realize how bad such group can be.

Mol originated in the USA, in the beginning of the '90s. This so-called "spiritual" organisation has spread easily and fast on German territory with Munich as the mother center for Europe. Only after Mol was talked about critically by some magazines like Der Spiegel, the leaders thought it would be better to move to the Netherlands: a nation were everything is tolerated and freedom of opinion is highly valued, where rules and regulation around destructive groups and spiritual organization have yet to be put in place.
Since 2006, Utrecht has become the new, rich soil to plant the poisonous seeds of thought reform, brainwashing, power games (it is all in the end about money, money, money) and massive manipulation. Attracted by some well-to-do people in the area, soon it became the new place to recruit members and money. At the same time the mother center in US moved from San Diego to Denver in Colorado.

Finally the pot will be stirred and the manipulative game exposed. If a single voice is not understood, or misunderstood because it is "only" a personal experience, now there will be proof. Thanks to the hidden camera scenes, the real nature of the secretive group that proclaims to have the only way to freedom will be revealed.

Thursday 24 Feb I watched an introductory preview of the program. I am certainly impressed by the short footage I saw, and by what the Undercover team have been able to accomplish in one years' work.

Mol better close down the shop after Sunday night. And the politicians in The Hague may start to do some serious thinking.

Undercover in Nederland will be broadcast on Sunday 27 February on SBS 6 at 9.30 p.m.

Standing still

Now I am standing still
watching the dirty water arise.
The transparency of the lake
will reveal
the insanity of its secret below.

The moon eventually
will shine even brighter
once the monster has been evacuated

Then you may see yourself
for who you truly are.

Chapter 8

My personal obituary for Kalindi's death.

On the 18th of April, 2010, Carol Seidman, aka Kalinda la Gourasana, aka the voice of god, died.

The news of her death came in an email, just the day after I finally arrived home in Amsterdam. A friend passed the news to me. Initially it was just a rumor, then over the hours more emails followed and confirmation came.

First thing that came to my mind was an old discourse of Gourasana, aka David Swanson, who just before he passed away spoke about Kalindi as his successor. Being the so-called 'Voice of God',  Miracle of love would continue under her divine inspiration and guidance.

"Kalindi", he said, "will live a long life" (I have time nor energy to find the exact quote and on which tape he spoke those words).
So he predicted a long life for Kalindi. But she died prematurely. Gourasana was wrong.

I don't have many feelings about it. Already once in my life I witnessed the death of a master, Osho.
I was there, in Poona during the last three years of his life. We knew he was sick, although we didn't really know of what. The conspiracy theory was that he was poisoned in Usa federal prison, and the effects of the poison deteriorated his health to the point of death.
I had not many feelings either back then. I remember I felt such a wave of freedom through my soul, together with a sense of wonder and disorientation. But also I had had a mild surgery just the day before he died, so I was still under the effects of narcosis.

But with Kalindi is different. I've had no contact with Miracle of love since April 2004 and I am calling myself free from the clasp of this pseudo spiritual organization. I feel compassion. As a good friend put it to me, it feels like learning of the death of a long ago ex-lover with bipolar disease.

She actually passed away exactly six years after I left Miracle of love. Or rather, after I was cast away by the wits and moods of Scotti who could not stand being questioned, contradicted or in anyway opposed. And that is what I did. The last time I stood up against his domineering and authoritarian attitude he sent me out of the room to cool off. Needless to say the following meeting with the Munich congregation I was asked to leave the MOL organization. More of my stories in previous blog entries on MOL.

Kalindi's departure doesn't bring tears to my eyes. My tears right now are flowing for my beloved father who lost his short-term memory all of a sudden. However I am sorry she died like she did. And I am sorry for her daughter and the few hundred disciples around the world who will feel lost, disoriented in pain and questioning.

MOL gives as reason of her departure disseminated intravascular coagulation precipitated by kidney failure (wikipedia). That is not a death that comes suddenly, she must have been sick for a while, and I wonder how much the devotees were allowed to know about her physical and mental condition. Like anything else in MOL, for example the real cause of  David Swanson's death, there is a veil of secrecy that cannot be lifted. Therefore you cannot even ask for the truth because everything will be answered to you as a transcendental reason or simply with a spiritualized Mol cliche. As it was with Gourasana's death, "he could not hold God's energy!"

I can see how the "love and care" team (oh, the doublespeak!) is organizing key people to support those who find it difficult to cope with Kalindi's death. A 12 days mourning program has been set up for her memorials. You even are told how to behave when the leader dies, according to the MOL standard. Many ex-members received an invitation for this program.

I'm sure there are a lot of discussions and speculations amongst people who have a family or friends involved in MOL, whether the Miracle of love organization will continue. Well, don't hold your hopes up, of course it will!

Even when I was still actively involved in the group there were preparations for who will succeed when the leaders will die. Miracle of love is structured like a pyramid (by power, not necessarily by wisdom, if there is any) and the next one in line will move up. The small fishes will have their time now to step up and lead more MOL members into more brainwashing and lies.

Personally I only hope some of the members will enter into some healthy doubts that eventually will bring them to real freedom from the cult.

Sister death does not spare anyone, not even a cult leader. And when sister death passes, it is always worth it to pause and re-examine your life. Truly it is the best meditation to shake you up and wake you up, not to surrender more to a dead master but to open your eyes and truly listen your inner voice. It has nothing to do with a cult leader self proclaimed Voice of God. It can be such an awakening time for so many people to really, deeply look what they are doing with their life in MOL.

There has been a number of world wide conference calls to inform the MOL members of the departure of Kalindi. In those calls people were sharing memories  and stories about her.

My last memory of Kalindi is from back in 2003, when I spent 3 hours scrubbing a fridge which was already cleaned, just prior to her first arrival in Germany, in Munich. When she finally arrived we had a huge meeting and an Intensive with everybody flying in from all over Europe to be with her. At my question why was I find it so difficult to surrender, she answered without looking into my eyes or even in my direction to not waste my time holding on and let my self fall into the abyss. "Was I not trusting that God is carrying me?"
I am glad I didn't listen and kept holding on to my true sense of myself.  And yes indeed I always trusted in God but not in her.

The smart dogs ran off
poem from Kabir (c.1440-1518)

I sat one day with a priest who expounded
on the doctrine of hell

I listened to him for hours,
then he asked me
what I thought of all he said.

And I replied,

" That doctrine seems an inhuman cage;
no wonder
the smart dogs ran off."

May you rest in peace Kalindi.

Chapter 7

No easy cure

It has been almost a year since I posted something about Miracle of love (MOL). My life has been filled with wonderful things, from the wedding to the trip to India, the walks in my mountains and the art of living in the wonderful, unpredictable and extremely alive city of Amsterdam.
In this last year though, my blog has been visited many times by people who were searching information about Miracle of Love or one of the leaders (Kalindi, Gourasana, the lady, Mata Mazzarati, Scotti etc). Whether some of these people are currently MOL members and checking what Milena is writing about them or not, I welcome everybody.
I know from the many private emails with requests for help that there are people who are truly concerned about the damaging effect that Miracle of Love participation can have on their loved one.

So here it is what I have to say to those of you who want to help others become aware of the treacherous path leading into mental slavery and cult structure lifestyle when involved in the Miracle of Love group.
For those who start doubting the “philosophy” of Kalindi, and are finding it very difficult to find the way out of this established mindset, it would be very helpful to have an approach of open mind and a willingness to risk everything they believe to be true about MOL, in order to find who they really are. And that is not MOL jargon, but simply the fact.
MOL doesn’t help you to find out who you really are - on the contrary, it creates more distance and more alienation from your identity. It’s called coercive persuasion, an elusive seduction to mold your individuality to the group belief system. It is coercive because you didn't ask for that. It is called persuasion because you don't realize, it is manipulative and it's a slimy road into brainwashing, yet more subtle.
There may be some hesitation to believe that an ex-Mol member, a dissenter like me, could write so openly about the “tricks behind the scene”. After all Mazzarati threatened me not to badmouth the MOL mission. By badmouthing, she meant revealing the inner workings of Miracle of love. I have no fear in voicing my experiences. It is a declaration of my true self.
But for them, it will be easier, and certainly less confronting, to accept the pseudo truths offered by Mol.

There is no easy or fast cure, from any sort of disease or abuse you may have been a victim of. Like with the body, you don’t need to know the extensive details of your medical diagnosis and certainly you don’t need to be a doctor to start the process of healing. But you do need to know what to do to help yourself to feel better and return to a healthy state again. So, it's the same with your illness regarding your mental slavery and lack of personal, mental, social, emotional freedom. In other words, where you have been thoroughly manipulated to believe others instead of yourself, your true identity self.
Likewise, you don’t need to know the philosophy of the group to understand and help the other. Instead you need to know how to relate to your loved one in a way that can help him to reconnect with his true identity.

“A group should not be considered a cult merely because of its unorthodox beliefs or practices. Instead destructive cults are distinguished by their use of deception and mind control techniques to undermine a persons’ free will and make him dependent on the group’s leader.”
--Stephen Hassan

There are some specific characteristics that define a destructive group. I have already written about my personal observation of those characteristics in MOL. As a framework, I used Robert J. Lifton’s eight criteria for thought reform and Margaret T. Singer’s six condition for thought reform. Once you identify those, you can be certain that you or your loved one is under the spell of manipulation to say the least.

Releasing the bond. Empowering people to think for themselves

When I was working in my way to get MOL out of my mind, I read a very significant book that helped me to see the direction I needed to take. It provided me with a new understanding of my past and the knowledge of a cult identity as something else then my real identity.
The book “Releasing the Bond” by Steven Hassan explains step by step how it is possible to undo the process of indoctrination by the cult, by first of all realizing that the person who is lost inside a cult, is not the actual true identity of that person. The family and friends of a cult member can do a lot, but when the level of involvement is so deep, the personality so molded with the group’s belief system, when there is very little doubt or no doubt at all, at least consciously, the help of a professional exit counselor or an organized intervention can make an essential difference.
I am not discussing here the powerful method of “strategic intervention” that Hassan describes thoroughly in his book. I would sincerely recommend reading it though, if you want to better understand the predicament you find yourself in and learn about a possible way out. Certainly it is a "must read" for those who want to help a friend, a loved one, a family members to come out of MOL.

I will only tell you what helped me. As "kicked out" member I had a brutal awakening of the madness I was in. I had to learn day by day how to find the sanity of my mind and heart again.
Working together with my exit councellor was coming at the end of my long ride out of MOL. The proverbial cherry on the cake.
Having been a member for eight years and one of the main recruiters in the European scene, I knew the entire belief system of MOL very well. I believed in it and was honestly going about my life wanting to pursue the MOL goal: to break-free from the bond of the illusion and return home to God. When I read "Releasing the bond", I could recognize all the methods of coercive persuasion and the mind control used by the miracle of love leaders very clearly. After Hassan’s book, I read many others on this subject.

This way, I educated myself in an area that was utterly taboo, and under a lot of judgments inside the group. When I was an “Mol true believer” I was subjected to the group “think”; there was no place for individual inquiry. Anything that could contradict the Mol path was an act of disobedience and therefore a sign of being in the illusion. My thoughts were not even mine anymore. It requires determination and discernment to reclaim and re-establish the freedom to think for yourself. When there is a will there is a way.

Through all my reading, I came to understand better my role in MOL.
I could acknowledge the passion and outrageousness that had me fight all the way, unable to bend my being to the lunatic dream of Mol’s mission of breaking free. The point is that along the line I was persuaded to think there was something wrong in me.
When I started to see that, I became very pissed off. And that, oh boy, really created enough fuel to let everything Mol has ever told me burn to ashes. Great recognition and humble acceptance that being a victim truly made me a survivor. My soul had survived, as my body did long ago. Scarred maybe, hurt surely, but at the end with the inner strength of a survivor.

Rebellious spirit

I let all the Miracle of Love philosophy crumble down like a castle in the sand.
I let it happen. I felt devastated and disappointed. I was relieved to breathe freely again, and at the same time I was very confused. I experienced anger, a healthy desire to take my life back as it was. I took time for silence, solitude and isolation. I created around and inside myself all the space I needed to connect with all that was important, valuable and cherished in my life prior to MOL, prior to the sannyas time with Osho
In order to do so I had to track myself back at a very young age.
Just recently my mother gave me some letters to read that I sent to my family during a summer study in Germany to learn the language. I read those letter and felt a rush of warmth at this 15 years old Milena that knew how to be alone, was passionate about walking in the mountain and was missing them, cared for her mountain friends, and was terribly in love with an 18 years old Italian sweetheart, Diego.
The first love, a happy one.
-I will always cherish those memories with him. He passed away at the age of 40 leaving his wife and daughter behind. God bless his soul and grants him eternal life with the angels above-.

The college she was living in was run by elderly nuns who also were the teachers. She couldn’t stand having to learn in such a structured and over scheduled way. She didn’t like the food and she didn’t like rules and authoritarian methods but foremost she took a lot of fun in disobeying it. A girl that, rather then compromise and settle for some apparent peace with her girlfriend who also shared the month and the room with her, would stick to herself even if it meant being often alone. A girl that loved to write and read, a girl that loved to dream for a better world.
A true rebellious spirit.

Starting a new life

When you start to feel critical about Miracle of Love, when doubts are entering your mind, when a sense of helpless disappointment about the constant push to improve yourself for god’s mission becomes unbearable and instead of feeling better you feel wronged all the time, know that these are good signs of hearing your true identity whispering a call for help to be freed up again from the group imprisonment.

To start a new life after being involved in a strictly regulated group, no matter for how long, can be overwhelming. But let me ask you, isn’t it overwhelming to have the Big Brother’s eye fixed on you for 24 hours a day? To always be kept in check by others? How can you truly be yourself when you are controlled, manipulated and persuaded - to do things you wouldn’t care a bit for otherwise, and not do the things you feel you would love to do that have a real meaning to you. Maybe you even forgot you had such dreams.
There are many issues to take care of, to find trust again is one of the biggest, hand in hand with healing the deep hurt in your being, the betrayal of your soul. This last one to me is one of the deepest pain.
In order to regain a sense of integrity and freedom of mind, you need time for introspection and revisiting yourself. You can’t do that when you’re inside Miracle of Love. The person who is coming out needs to learn how to think for himself outside of the Miracle of Love box of thoughts.

To snap out

I remember the favorite expression of Scotti when we did “illusion work”.
“Snap out!” “Snap out of your self absorption, snap out of the illusion!” he would scream at us, creating a sense of terror and immense powerlessness which always made me bite my tongue and clench my fists in anger. There was something so perverse about the kind of break free scene that he, Kalindi, Mazzarati used to do with us in order to help us breaking free. I recall once Racole, another MOL leader, was on the phone with me screaming to let go of my boyfriend, snap out of myself, cry harder and call her back when I felt I snapped out of myself and understood the “break free lesson”. An our later or so I called her back in rage as ever before but playing humble. I was "forgiven" and not kicked out of the house as threatened earlier. It lasted only few days, then I was moved to another household, literally imposed not to talk to my boyfriend, let him date other women and eventually to stop my fresh relationship with him.
In very ancient Zen tradition the Zen masters used to puzzle their disciples with questions that required in order to be answered a leap of consciousness and not the logical, “ordinary” mind. There are many of these Zen Koans, that leave you thinking till the point you give up thinking altogether and discover a moment of enlightenment for yourself, a moment of the “great mind”.
"The sound of one hand clapping" is my favorite.
I never felt that Scotti and the rest of the leaders troop had the deep knowledge or, more importantly, the great understanding of this ancient eastern tradition. On the contrary, there was in my opinion a lot of pretending, dishonesty and suppressed anger.

Scotti used to snap as a word that he invented, but it is as old as the English language.

One of the many definition of the word is:
to break, part, or be released suddenly, esp. with a sharp, cracking sound.
To recover pull through, get over, revive
To cheer up, perk up, take heart, keep one's spirits up
To move quickly back to one's normal condition from an undesirable condition, such as depression, grief, or self-pity.

He gave a new meaning to those words, that would reinforce the Mol belief system. You were expected to find the correct answers or the adequate behavior, or the perfect action or sudden jerk of your conscious mind as if awakening, which of course never occurred. Failing to accomplish the leader desired result was causing massive humiliation, public recrimination and often times strict guidance as punishment.
I witnessed and was the victim of many of these break free scenes. It always felt like I was never giving the right answer. Let me tell you, those prolonged session of illusion work, a technique known in psychology as hot seats, were in fact indoctrinating us with fear and a sense of submission and unconditional obedience.

Now, in the process of regaining your true identity, you need to snap out of those Miracle of love beliefs and start to learn to use your own mind again.

However deep your involvement may be, however identified with the group and its own purpose, however enmeshed with the personality of Kalindi or the lady you are, your true self is like your skin, you can’t completely get rid of it and replace it with another identity like the cult Mol identity. It will surface again and again and pull at your skirt to make you listen.

Would you turn around and give yourself credit for who you truly are, even though you may have forgotten or were persuaded to forget, deny or ignore your true essence in the name of the higher cause of Miracle of Love?

To find my song

So let me repeat. First step in recovery is to realize you have been a victim.
To be able to recognize yourself as a victim or your loved one as a victim of a cult you need to learn few basics about thought control, coercive persuasion, studying tactics of manipulation and understanding the principles of a destructive mind control.
You haven't really left if you haven't come to the realization that you lost yourself in a mind controlled group. Having lost yourself here means exactly what it says. You lost your true identity and you can find it back, if you want it. Therefore it is not helping you defending either the cult leaders or the cult belief system.
Equally, it is not important to know the entire Mol belief system when helping someone out of Mol.
Don’t even waste your energy in attacking them either. There will be anger for sure, use it as a propellant to regain yourself.

Whatever experience that was positive and has contributed to your life will remain and you can always go back to it. But the first step, that so often has been missed, is to question everything.

One of the exercises that my exit counselor asked me to do was to identify the Mol loaded language ( jargon) and look up the real meaning of each word in a dictionary. Taking away the load of Mol cultic interpretation and usage of that word helps to bring back the real meaning and therefore looses its MOL connotation and its triggering power. There is so much more to say about triggers that will need another article.

There is one thing though I want to add here. Music has been always a great tool for the MOL indoctrinating session, called the 'Gourasana Meditation Practice', usually shortened to GMP.
Music in its purity can transport you into places unknown and deep within that can expand your consciousness. It can gently touch the musical chord of your soul and resonate a moment of perfection. But when music is used to persuade and force you into a sea of feeling, raw emotions, and a state of perennial havoc it is an instrument of manipulation - and one of the most powerful and effective. Music was a terrible trigger that I needed to regain control of.
Part of my recovery was not to listen to any music used in the GMP - therefore I stopped meditating the MOL way altogether. Finally after eight years I stopped crying and rolling on the floor in agonizing longing, the ultimate induced altered state, perfect to trap you in the vulnerable emotional condition of the mind necessary to be indoctrinated.
Instead I listened to music that reminded me of my younger age and music that was not contaminated by MOL and didn’t trigger the time I spent there. I had time also finally to sing myself. So I joined a gospel choir together with Driek the real talented singer in the house.

Writing

Writing down all I could remember was a very important tool. It already had an impact on me during my time in MOL.
Writing to me is a form of healing. You can analyze yourself and consequently you may understand yourself better. You can finally own the meaning of each word and use it to express yourself in the many possible creative forms. I contributed for a couple of years with my writing to the online support group for MOL survivors, and now I write in my blog.
Someone said if your life is worth living then is also worth writing it.

Reading and writing - and then at the end speaking.
I believe one can make a difference in telling one’s story, overcoming the pervasive ignorance surrounding mind control cults, shedding light over the shadowy dark consequences of manipulation, totalitarianism and thought control.

Reading

I just finished reading a book from a friend of mine I met at the ICSA conference last year. In I can’t hear God anymore, Wendy Duncan tells the story of her involvement in a bible cult in Dallas. Although the group was very different in its belief system, it is astoundingly amazing how the tactics that defines a social restrictive and abusive group are the same as I experienced in Miracle of Love.

Already in 1948, George Orwell published his classic “Nineteen Eighty-four”. It may be defined as a pessimistic book, as he wrote himself, but you can take it as a word for alertness, and as a powerful warning against the evil of totalitarianism, brainwashing, thought reform, thought control.
A wonderful read if you want to know how the mind can be so thoroughly manipulated that you completely loose yourself, burying so deep your true essence. From questioning the strict regime of the Big Brother, Winston, the character of the book, transforms himself so radically to believe the Abuser is in fact the Savior. From criticizing in the privacy of his mind and profoundly disliking the alienating regime and its dictator he is “changed” into loving his enemy, the Big Brother.
Orwell wrote it as a tale to address values that were dear to him. He had a deep understanding of the human mind and was sensitive to social pressures and totalitarian regimes. He was a fighter for human rights.
It was not just a tale. It is the experience of so many intelligent, sensitive, learned people who were caught in a vulnerable moment of their lives, in thought control environment without releasing it.
We come to know about it because people have been leaving those destructive groups and voiced their experience.
There are more and more people leaving cults. More and more people are leaving Mol as well.

This to me is a testimonial of the strength of the true identity and of human spirit.

Chapter 6

Miracle of love exposed in ICSA

Miracle of Love has been finally exposed to the international academic and researcher world of ICSA.
On june 30 2007 I presented a session on the group Miracle of love.at the International Cultic Study Association conference in Bruxelles. (June 29-July 1),

I have done my part together with my friend Gina Catena and Sjoukje Drenth-Bruintjes, dutch exit counselor and good friend. The presentation was well done and well received.
Now the information is out there. A recording of the speech can be purchased at the website of ICSA.

Mol indoctrination on fear.
During my involvement with the organization I was truly taken aback when I heard of friends who left Mol or were kicked out.
First of all, I often didn’t understand why people would leave. To me MoL was providing a venue to pursue a spiritual goal and although the “way” of going at “it” was treacherous and full of austerity, I was hoping with every next event, Intensive seminar, Retreat or personal guidance to achieve the dreamed state of “full awareness” and “compassionate love”. We all believed in it and we were committed to help each other to reach that task.

Walk away

Many of the "walk aways” never really cut the ties with Mol. This way, they never truly recovered from the damage of the group influence. Some of these people have had relapses and returned to Mol, love bombed by the members of the group. They also received special treatment and praises for having “won over the illusion” of the outside world and “understood” the real purpose of MoL. Of course, after the initial welcome and sometimes upgrade to a position of leadership, life would become tough again, but at that point all the resistance would have been broken and the domestication was firmly in place, reinforcing conformity and social belonging.

Most people came back because they were missing exactly that “special bonding” amongst people, and couldn’t cope with their loneliness.

When two of my best friends left, I started wondering what was so negative about Mol that these committed people turned their shoulder to the organization. Both of them were involved at a very deep level and were part of a very selective and special team, both for Kalindi and the Lady. In my eyes, they had everything, being close to the masters and having a special status in the hierarchy. It was hard to get them to tell me what happened to them. Each (separately) didn’t want to put any blame on Mol or Kalindi, but they both left because what was asked of them was far beyond what they wanted to give. One of them was asked to donate his million dollar house to Kalindi, and the other had a real conflict of power with Kalindi and Lady Gayle.
But both didn’t want to speak about it. Eventually they confided their motivations and reason to me.

Mol truth versus secrecy
Their silence has protected the misgivings of MoL, and as far as I know, none of the many long term members who left every spoke out adversely to MOL in public.
MoL teaches that dissenters, the rebellious, the walk aways and in general ex members are not to be trusted.
When you leave, you find yourself still under the spell of these teachings, and you are afraid to freely express your personal experience, let alone to be negative about an organization which you supported for a long time.

Mol makes certain that you are programmed not to declare anything about the organization to the media or interested partners. The indoctrination with fear is so dominant that hardly anyone would feel it would be worth going through the discomfort and possible harassment from Mol. People who walk away from MoL choose therefore to sweep the abuse and manipulation they were the object of and witnessed in others under the carpet.

MoL Heterosexual policy
In ’98 or so Mol came out with a new policy of membership.
heterosexual policy MoL tape
Homosexuals could no longer participate in the work of the MoL mission. From one day to another, they had to leave the group. Kalindi recorded a deluded rationalization on tape.
If they really wanted, they could be re-accepted - but only if they would be ready to “let go” of their homosexuality and “turn” heterosexual.
A rose is a rose is a rose. But Kalindi doesn't think that way.
This was one of the greatest mistakes Kalindi inflicted on devoted and very beautiful people. On the other hand personally I am happy for them they didn’t waste any more time and money to be on their knees at her feet.

This homosexual policy cut down tremendously Mol membership. Not only did the gays leave because they had to, but many of their friends and others who dissented this new "delirium" of Kalindi left as well. I remember that time vividly - how cried silently, to be part of such a selective, abusive and discriminative group. At that time, I had been living in the Mol community for one year and I had already sacrificed much and cut ties with much of my past, it was difficult for me to think about leaving.
After having questioned enough and without receiving an appropriate answer, only prescript Mol bullshit, I silenced my doubts. I kept working very hard to learn compassion and unconditional love from leaders who were the most discriminating people I ever met.

A testimonial of a gay former Mol member:
http://www.tothegateway.org/gateway/Michael-Sigmann

Castaway or kicked out
When I heard the brother of my ex-boyfriend was kicked out I collapsed inside. I guess in many ways I had received signs of what would happen to me if I would continue to rebel, voice my doubts, argue with the leaders and not really learning the “surrendering ways”.
Even in this situation, my friend never spoke about it and in fact he was still protecting and defending MoL's decision. It was his fault and not Mol sinister ways of dealing with people. MoL leaders told him to go and work on his anger. It sounds familiar!!!

Mol doesn’t speak about the people that have been kicked out.
As members we were told not to question the ways leadership would decide someone’s life and/or participation in Mol activities. There has been always a coat of silence over certain people. Simply from one day to the other you wouldn’t hear from them anymore and if you would ask where did they go, the answer mostly was: they are taking time to reflect whether they want to be in Mol or not. When in reality they already left or were told to leave.

The secrecy of Mol is kept in place by a silent agreement not to reveal anything, trivial or very meaningful, about the ways you are “worked through’. The rationalization is that you as a member cannot understand the ways of the master and the ways of breaking free. If breaking free would be that easy then everyone would be free and there would be no need for Kalindi and Mol to exist.

I personally received guidance from Mazzarati not to badmouth the MoL mission and was threaten that my "consciousness will be hurt" if I would speak.
My consciousness will be hurt if I stay silence.
My biggest freedom is to be myself completely and no one can ever take that away from me. No one ever was able and no one ever will be able!

After years of spiritual life and much bullshit too, I simply appreciate the simple gift of living and to express your passage on earth with the true colors of your essence.
Why should I be silent about my life and of those around me?

I stand here to prove that real courage is to overcome fear - not to feel no fear.
I have a lot to say on this subject but I want to finish with a sense of completion I had after the ICSA presentation.
It is freeing to express your opinion, and it's even more fulfilling to tell your story.

And my story goes on.
After all I am a mountain girl who doesn't stop easily in front of challenges. Rather I am embracing them. Sweet rambo Milena

More to come.
I am very busy these days as my friend Lorena is coming in town to have fun with me and sing together with Peter Makena concert and workshop here in Amsterdam.
My favorite song during my recovery from MoL indoctrination.
It is a song of freedom to be oneself.

Invitation. (ORIAH Mountain dreamer)

......It doesn't interest me if the story
you are telling me is true.
I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true
to yourself; if you bear the accusation of betrayal, and
not betray your own soul.......

Chapter 5

Today's topic: "critical thinking"

After I left MoL I started to read a lot of books and online articles on the subject of destructive cults, thought reform, coercive persuasion and of course about the recovery process. Websites such as those of Rick Ross, ICSA, Factnet and Steven Hassan provided me with valuable information that helped me to understand and heal my intense experience in MoL. Of course this didn't happen the day after I was out of MoL.
One of the things that fascinated me the most was the critical thinking ability. I finally "understood" this expression used by my exit counselor, when she told me I was quite lucky that I had a strong critical thinking and that in itself was a "good thing". Finally someone who was appreciative of my qualities and didn't exploit, judged and control me like the people in MoL.

So here it is what I have to say.

Critical thinking definition.

I looked up Wikipedia's definition of critical thinking.
"Critical thinking is an on-going concern with the problems inherent in human thinking. It leads to the historical art of analyzing and evaluating thinking with a view to improving it.
However, a large part of critical thinking goes beyond informal logic and includes assessment of beliefs and identification of prejudice, bias, propaganda, self-deception, distortion, misinformation, etc."

Critical thinking is “a way of taking up the problems of life.” (William Graham Sumner, Folkways, 1906)
And one of the biggest components of critical thinking is the ability to question.

Critical thinking in MOL

MoL doesn’t accept a critical mind, and MoL doesn’t answer simple questions. MoL is full of unworthy people trying to be worthy by screaming rules and guidance (it happened to me all the time) and much too often overpowering others in subtle and tricky ways. In this way they get their highs, they think they are right, and they for a brief moments feel themselves not unworthy. For a while I had nightmares in which some of the MoL leaders were screaming at me.
MoL impoverishes the ability to think in many, sophisticated ways. Even if their intentions would be good, the means are not justifying the intentions. And their means are real nasty to say the least!

Cogito ergo sum

The great ability of the mind to think freely, to make an assessment of experiences, situations, facts, to check reality, to question beliefs, ideas, values is very compromised in a cult-structured group like MoL.

About the GMP
One of the fundamental teachings of MoL is the GMP, or Gourasana Meditation Practice. This meditation is geared to release emotions in the first stage, then calming the mind in the second, to think clearly in the third stage, so it can find solution to the problem of your life. MoL talks a lot about the importance of thinking this way. But it is not free, critical thinking. This very tool, taught mostly by Jim St James, one of MoL's main leaders, is set up to indoctrinate the MoL beliefs system. The mind is taught to ask questions in this meditative space, but only within the Ultimate goal to break free from life and death and go Home to God.

Jim would spend hours instructing us in the most tedious, repetitive and obsessive way, how to ask question about let's say a simple object. I remember a Retreat with him where we spent most of the days learning each others phone numbers. There were around 70 participants in that Retreat, and we exercised endlessly to memorize both a land line number and cellular for everyone. At the question, why we were wasting so much time for such an unnecessary and not gratifying task he answered that it was helping to "increase our desire for God".

Since I left the group I've lost interest in learning any telephone number. I don't even know my own unless I read it. In this age of electronic phone books in every handset, who needs to know numbers by heart?

In Mol, you're not invited to think with your mind and to question any of the so called basic MoL "truths". You are supposed to surrender your criticism and only find answers to the questions that can help you have a life within the MoL organization and moreover to deepen your "faith" or dependency. Slowly we were trained to ask those questions that bind you more to the group and with the purpose of the group.
How to make more money for yourself and find ways to own more money, was less important than funding the MoL mission. How to extend your "friendship" to the outside was subordinate to fulfill another basic "must" and requirement of the MoL mission: how to find new recruits to participate in the Intensive seminar. Remember, more people coming in meant more money to the established power-house Kalindi.

Whenever I was expressing doubts about some of the abusive and manipulative behaviour of leaders, contradicting certain teachings from Kalindi or resisting guilt trip from the Lady, just to name a few, I was silenced with a label: I was told I was arrogant, fighting the guidance, not surrendering my ego, being in the illusion, even ridiculed for even thinking those "independent" thoughts and "not loving Kalindi enough." And not only was criticism strongly discouraged, even positive suggestions for improvement were quickly dismissed and belittled. We were not supposed to know a better way, because God/Kalindi already had thought through the best way for us.

Continuing with wikipedia.
"In a Greek-English Lexicon the verb krino- means to choose, decide or judge. Hence a krites is a discerner, judge or arbiter. Those who are kritikos have the ability to discern or decide.
The word krino- also means to separate (winnow) the wheat from the chaff or that which has worth from that which does not."
In other words to distinguish what is true from what is false, a con-artist from a truly genuine, honest guide.

"The mind has no answers. The heart has no questions."

This is one of the many quotes from MoL. It sounds nice but it has a very heavy implication: if you question, you are heartless. This is unacceptable. Without a heart you can never be with God, but without your mind you can!
Miracle of Love promotes and wants an unquestionable trust and faith to the teachings of Kalindi and her subordinates. Being critical to any of them is a sign of a strength of will/ego, therefore a lack of humility and submission to the leadership. You are not suppose to have your own judgments or to choose freely, not to think about deciding your life.

MoL teaches black-and-white thinking such as: everyone outside the group is lost in the illusion. Kalindi is the Voice of God and she is to be followed no matter what, but for sure not questioned. If you behave according to the rules you'll be rewarded otherwise you'll be "work through" heavily.( Other MoL definition for molding your ego)

Slowly the average recruit starts to learn that there is something intrinsically wrong in thinking on your own, and adjust himself to think out of the box of Mol belief system.
To reinforce this strategy Kalindi and her leaders came up with a list called The 10 NO’s:

1. No Assumption or speculation
2. No hearsay
3. No rumours
4. No gossip
5. No discouragement
6. No judgment
7. No negative thinking
8. No wallowing
9. No issues
10. No complaining

If you were caught in one of the above you were publicly scolded and of course you would have to prove in the next meeting that you understood the lesson by mostly denying a true part of yourself. For the sake of the group acceptance, you would settle for a compromise. A gentle persuasive slide into the abnegation of your real identity.

In a group like MoL those great abilities of the mind that makes a person an individual on his own, become impaired. The damage to the critical thinking is most difficult to heal and to recuperate. It also prevents a current member to open his eyes and decide to leave, on the contrary it perpetrates the mental slavery and the sheep-like participation to the group.

There are many ways of shutting down this process that greatly inhibits the thinking. One of them is through induced guilt.
How many times I heard I was not humble enough, I didn't really want to find God, I had not enough desire to change, I was not silent enough to receive God/help.
I received guidance not to ask any question anymore in public Mol meeting, actually not to talk and draw any attention, not to wear make up, not to say NO anymore, instead going around and say: I am sorry. I was forced to be on my knees and apologize for... I still don't know what for! Thankfully, I don't care anymore, either.
The guilt was turned on to me, never onto the MoL, never onto Kalindi or Mazzarati or the Lady or Jim or Scotti.

Another block to critical thinking is making you afraid. MoL indoctrinates with fear. The basic and biggest fear within MoL is that "you cannot break free in this life time and have to return to earth". So you are urged not to discuss, not to dissent, to over criticize your mistakes, to minimize your natural qualities and of course not to take pride in any achievement - otherwise, you might not make it. You can't have fun and enjoy a moment of happiness because that is the illusion. And to be in illusion is to suffer.

To surrender or not to surrender to the path?

I was never able to fully surrender to the path of Miracle of Love.
Although the attempts to silence my voice and break my spirit were many and abusive, I never let go of the fight, which in itself for MoL is the greatest sin.

I believe one of the main reasons why no one was ever able to completely suppress my critical thinking lay in the fact that the guilt trip they put on me never worked!
I tend to have a very strong temperament and the eternal rebel in me could throw a fit of anger in front of any leader, disrespectful of them and fearless. Once Gourasana said that anger was the worst emotion in a human. That is when the witch-hunt started in MoL and anyone who had an issue with anger was the target of massive brutal manipulation disguised through subtle persuasion technique and through a skilled system of behaviour control. (letter reporting, spy on each other, etc.)
At times a sense of shame and guilt was really bothering me for having lashed out on people however right I might have been. I was mostly trying to defend myself for the constant attacks at my personality. But yet again, I was under the spell of MoL jargon and definition of emotion. They called anything that was not surrender anger. They called my questioning and my critical thinking anger. They called me names, labeled me, humiliated me and blamed me for asserting myself, which in their vocabulary, was called being angry.

Because the consequences of having raised my voice were pretty heavy in terms of punishments, I started to develop my own inner strategy to survive those games.
Yes, many times I was not allowed to talk or express any opinion, so I built up my own private ideas about the teaching of Mol, about the leaders, the rest of the members and started to fight for space just to be me. I still believed in a sense of freedom within the group. I believed in finding your individuality, your "true-self" (MoL jargon - your very essence) within the group.
I didn't have a problem with myself as they were having it with me. I just wanted to be me.
That is practically impossible in the Miracle of Love organization.
It is actually the wrong direction to go in a path that promotes "surrendering your will". That is also the reason why at the end of trying to break my ego, I was dismissed, as castaway.

Conclusion
As many professionals and ex members have already said, it is not enough to be out of a cult to undo the negative and destructive influence of the group.
The recovery process of "getting the cult out of the mind" is to me to find a way to remove the blocks imposed on the critical thinking ability, to re-learn how to use your mind freely, to deal with the painful feelings of betrayal, disorientation and many life challenge you may face after leaving. And foremost to trust again.
It takes time but it is possible.

I wish luck, success and healing to all of those who wish to find their true, real identity again.

Chapter 4

The truth to be revealed!

About Gourasana - Miracle of Love's founder.

I never met David Swanson aka Gourasana in person; he died in March 1995, before I did my first Intensive. However, his followers put together a booklet of his teachings that became the Miracle of Love bible. This book called "Breaking the Cycle of Birth and Death" is a collection of quotes spoken by Gourasana between '87 and '90. Anyone in the MoL organization has to possess one. And on top of that, every MoL house needs to have one copy in each toilet, so never a moment will pass without being reminded that "you better move your ass" if you want to "Go home in this lifetime".
"No time to waste" (Mol most favourite quote) even while you are involved in human biological activities.
Indoctrination and control hand in hand!
There is nothing new in that book that was not already said by some great men, though not necessarily in the same context, since Gourasana depicts and reduces life and human feeling to sheer suffering and illusion. The underlying message is to strive for liberation, salvation, breaking free, because other then that there is no hope on this plane of illusion. The choice is you don't have a choice, you are bound to come back and have another life with more suffering and more illusion.
The devoted reader is invited to pray, but prayer becomes a must, becomes something forceful, becomes your slavery. And bottom line whatever I did I was never praying enough!!!

Last year in Amsterdam I met an old sannyasin friend who described me what he felt and thought the first time he saw Gourasana. He was in his last stages of his sickness, so he was big and very unstable on his feet.
My friend was standing in the dark meditation room when he saw him right at the entrance door, surrounded by an aura created by the sunlight. And he thought: Jeez... this guy looks like an alien and out of his mind, something funky is going on here. That to me sums it up what Mol really is: a lunatic dream of a crazy, narcissistic leader.

Nobody ever find out what David/Gourasana died of. The reason given to the Mol devoted members and to the world at large was that he couldn't handle God's energy. He let himself die. Kind of...... imploding into enlightenment.
Less esoteric interpretation impute his death to AIDS. Whatever it may have been, MoL promotes his death as great example of sacrifice. If a simple man could give up his life and his body to let God coming through him, others can try to achieve the same and at least follow him.
The quote most associated with David/Gourasana is: "Sweet and willing surrender".
As a member of Mol you have to strive for this goal and anything different is bound to be rejected.

Kalindi - Gourasana's widow and his voice.

After listening for years the soothing, gentle, trance-like voice of Osho, I disliked the sound of Kalindi's voice to my bones. Her voice is like a triple espresso in one go early morning: you would never relax. And that is indeed the main underlying attitude in a MoL lifestyle, stress and anxiety.
Over the years she changed her approach, by trying to talk slowly and softly, but I could always hear her anxiety behind her words.
The "Voice of God", as she proclaimed herself, has never really attracted me. I stayed for many years in MoL despite, not because of Kalindi's Voice. I stayed because I believed in my own process and in my own sincerity to pursue one of my life spiritual goal.

Having been myself a true believer I made the best out of that experience. Of course, now that I am out of MoL, what I call 'the best' is not quite the same as it was when I was in.

Kalindi loves to have her disciples look her in the eyes and pretend that what comes shining through - or not - is coming straight from God, actually "the immense love of God". Her eyes are pitch black, to me there was nothing warm and loving in her eyes.
Before you could look into her eyes, one to one, you had been either waiting for hours in a line or meditating for hours or both, while leaders were instructing you what to see when you look at her. So... you were bound to feel something great, because of the effort and money you paid to be there. I was persuasively invited to worship Kalindi as the only answer to the question of this planet, how to save myself and others from the spell of illusion.

Kalindi, whose real name is Carol Seidman, was taken couple of times into a psychiatric hospital. Of course no one in the organization knew about it. I only found out myself after I left MoL, although gossip and rumors about some of her extreme behaviour reached my ears while I was involved. There was no way you could find out what was really going on, again you were supposed to trust, believe and surrender everything, especially your thinking mind. Kalindi was freed up from answering questions about her private life. Try to ask God what he is doing all day and you will hear that it's none of your business. Your business is only to follow what she said how much contradictory may be. You jump, you don't think.
Her lifestyle was very expensive and I can't recall how many times we gathered together to collect money to fund a new house for her, or anything else she liked to have.

I have many stories to tell about how frantic everyone was in Munich in preparation for her first and only visit to the European MoL community in the Summer of 2003. This time coincided with my acute crisis of my life in MoL.

About the Lady.

What to say about "the Lady"? Previously known as Gayle, to me she was the biggest disappointment of the holy trio. She was a children's school teacher by the time she met Carol/Kalindi and David Swanson.
Gayle was given the name "the Lady" by Gourasana, who felt she was becoming more and more like the holy mother and had "the destiny to teach the people on earth how to pray".

For a while Lady Gayle stole my heart and I was forced to follow her footstep. Let me explain.
She was known in the past as an angry bitch ready to lash and scream at people but she transformed into the mother of compassion and was made second hand in charge, after Kalindi.
When I met her during my first Intensive I liked her. She had something of my attitude, very well hidden, but still visible to my eyes. Of course before actually seeing her I was told by members how holy she was, how wonderful she was with people and how much she really loves me, even though she didn't even know me, just because "she loves everyone who comes to the Intensive". Also the one who are not coming! Recruitment strategy.

She made a tape once about her transformation and particularly about her anger prior the transformation. Transformation in this context is referred to the process of letting go your ego according to the Mol guidance and find your true self within your connection with God/Gourasana.
I was told again and again to use the Lady as an example of how she transformed from an angry bitch into a pure and loving being.

I received guidance to listen carefully this tape everyday for several months and write every day what I understood and how I will apply those teaching to my life. Those reports were on top of all the other duties in MoL endless lists of jobs.
For a while this tape became my only hope and inspiration that it was possible to "let go of anger" and become the sweet little being every leader wanted me to be. I was believing there was something wrong in feeling angry and did everything I could to fix that. Obviously now, without succeeding.
Over the years I closely watched the Lady and I often felt an edginess, ready to explode attitude transpiring from her loving look. She played the humble, very humble at Kalindi's feet and she was also very often reprimanded by her - I witnessed that scenario many times.
But our "loving mother" was loosing her temper and behaving dictatorially with her subordinates if contradicted. And of course, no one knew about it.

In 2002 I was due to be in bed for several months after a serious surgery to my knee, and wrote to the Lady about it.
One year later I received her answer. The same thing again and again "to do everything I can not to take birth again..." When I shared with my former friend and house leader "what a spaced case" the Lady was to answer me one year later, he told me that "The Lady really doesn't belong to this realm any longer. She lives somewhere else with The Light Being. She doesn't live like 'normal' people in the normal frame of time and space".
I rolled my eyes and said nothing. You can' t argue with any of the leaders. But that was one of the many signs I felt that something was not quite right.
A year later I was gone!

I can see, now, through the lies of the apparent perfection of those leaders.
